October 2015

South Carolina Treasure and Artifact Association - October Minutes             October 30, 2015

The SCTAA met on October 26, 2015 with 24 in attendance including Scott from Greenville, Rick who has relocated from Wisconsin and Larry Rabon of Hendersonville who has joined for 2016.

Reports:  Everyone enjoyed the Lake Lure Hunt.  Two hunters could not come and an unregistered hunter asked to come.  So we converted the two hunters fees into 2016 club memberships and included the additional hunter.

The hunt for the wedding ring for the bereaved Howard family at the wreck site on Hwy. 25 was unsuccessful.  At some point, Mrs. Howard would like for club members to hunt the yard where Jordan Howard did yard work the day before the tragic accident.

Officer nominations were taken and voted on with no opposition.  Officers for 2016 are:
President - Kenny Bracket (since 2014)
Vice-president - Maggie Moffat (since about 2006)
Secretary - Vince DiCarlo (new)
Treasurer - Randy Reece ( since 2014)
Board Members - Robert Weaver (since about 2006), Haskell Staton (new)

September treasury ended with a balance of $ 1,832.94.  We collected:  raffle  - $105; donation can - $8.98;  2015 memberships $50;  2016 memberships - $50;  sale of decals - $1;  Fall Hunt at Lake Lure - $60.  We paid out $1,380 for prizes for the hunt. The October deposit is $274.98. The amended closing balance (discrepancy noted) in the checking account is now $ 757.86.  We also keep $30 cash in small bills set aside to make change.

Robert Weaver presented the program titled “Encouragement” in Kenny’s absence.   One tip Robert and his son learned the hard way, was to always have a backup detector at a competition hunt.  Robert would also like input from members regarding planning and conducting another hunt in November or next spring.  He and son, Rodney, made an eBay purchase of a jar of old coins and will report back about what the jar contained.

Members were reminded that officer nominations will take place in October and voting will take place in November.

August 2015

South Carolina Treasure and Artifact Association - August Minutes            August 26, 2015

The SCTAA met on August 24, 2015 with 26 in attendance.  The club has a total of 41 members so far this year; new/first-time members:  Glenn and Lolita Dudek and Robert Valenta.  So far, we have 20 hunters signed up for the Fall Hunt at Lake Lure.

The program was a sharing time.  Allen Sheriff brought his Civil War memorabilia, some he has found and some he purchased.  This led to a discussion about the dangers of old cannonballs that have fuses.  They can explode because moisture can cause the black powder to turn to gas.  Something like a shovel strike can produce a spark that results in an explosion.  Spartanburg’s Croft State Park is dangerous because it still contains live ammunition that was used for practice during World War I.

Upcoming:  Relic hunting at Cowpens National Battle Field for the Rangers - August 29 and 30

The SCTAA met on January 26, 2015 with 36 in attendance including  6 visitors, C. Bell, Alton Williams, Steve Horkovy(?), and Rich Revenson who signed in and two others.  We collected 6 more membership dues for 2015 bringing the total to 28 so far this year.

The program was a discussion and revision of the club By-Laws.
*A question was asked recently, “Should items found without using a detector (visually discovered while laying on top of the ground), be entered in the monthly contest?”  After discussion, the members overwhelmingly voted to allow such items to be included.
*The Treasure Hunter Contest Donations category was amended to a sliding scale:
Donations of coins or other items (usually for upcoming hunt)  -----    1 to 10 points
Silver Dollar = 10 pts.; Silver Fifty Cent Piece = 5 pts.; Silver Quarter = 3 pts.; Silver Dime = 2 pts.;
Silver war nickels/buffalo or earlier or wheat pennies or earlier = 1 pt. each.
Clarification is needed about setting a cap on the number of points which can be earned per month.
