South Carolina Treasure and Artifact Association - October Minutes

The SCTAA met on October 28, 2013 with 37 in attendance including visitors:  Cale Smith and Kato Hicks; and new 2014 member Tal Cloud.  Members reported enjoying the annual hunt at Lake Lure.  Thirty hunters paid and 29 participated.  We missed Robert Weaver, who had a sore shoulder.

Officer nominations took place and will be voted on in November.  The nominees are:       President - Kenny Brackett, Vice-President - Maggie Moffat, Treasurer - Randy Reece,          Secretary - Rebecca Reece, at-large board members - Carter Mahaffee and Robert Weaver.

During the program time, Kenny Brackett shared his experiences detecting around the Landrum train depot where he made some relic finds of historical significance - particularly some bullet casings from the late 1800's that could be related to the murder of U.S. Marshal James Ledford on June 12, 1877.  There is an interesting article about it all in Life in our Foothills magazine which is in our club library.  There will be a future opportunity for members to detect in dirt excavated from the same site with finds going to the town of Landrum.  Randy Gatchel (864-839-3598 or lincolnrg@aol.com) announced his treasure hunt is being resumed.

Important Dates:  Annual Awards Banquet - January 13, 2014 (Ryan's Buffet, Greer at 6:30 p.m.)
Treasure Hunt of the Carolinas (Blacksburg, SC) - March 29-30, 2014

September treasury ended with a balance of $1,883.18.  We paid out $1,795.85 for coin/prizes for the Lake Lure hunt and adjusted the balance by subtracting $30 to account for Tyronne Phillips paying his hunt fee with coins valued at $30 which were put into the hunt field.  We collected: 2013 Memberships - $50; 2014 Memberships - $425;  Money Donations for Points - $125; donation can - $17; Lake Lure Hunt fees - $90. The amended closing balance is $764.33.
