November 2015

South Carolina Treasure and Artifact Association - November Minutes          November 28, 2015

The SCTAA met on November 23, 2015 with 29 in attendance including new member, Mark Lightfoot.

Reports: Bill Guthke called Randy to let us know he has lung cancer.  We signed a Get Well card and Randy delivered it on Tuesday.  Robert Weaver asked for the by-laws to be amended to clarify the issue of Lake Lure hunt fees being applied to next year’s dues if a member finds he cannot attend the hunt.  Currently, the by-laws do not address the issue.  Years back, it seems no refunds or adjustments were allowed.

The program was a turkey shoot using darts and a dart board.  Chris Phillips won first prize, a turkey and Jimmy Cochran was second and won a pumpkin pie.

September treasury ended with a balance of $ 757.92.  We collected:  raffle  - $82; donation can - $13.01;  2016 memberships - $525;  sale of decals - $4.50. We converted $5 in half dollars to birthday coins. The November deposit is $624.51. The amended closing balance (discrepancy noted) in the checking account is now $ 1,377.43.  We also keep $30 cash in small bills set aside to make change.

October 2015

South Carolina Treasure and Artifact Association - October Minutes             October 30, 2015

The SCTAA met on October 26, 2015 with 24 in attendance including Scott from Greenville, Rick who has relocated from Wisconsin and Larry Rabon of Hendersonville who has joined for 2016.

Reports:  Everyone enjoyed the Lake Lure Hunt.  Two hunters could not come and an unregistered hunter asked to come.  So we converted the two hunters fees into 2016 club memberships and included the additional hunter.

The hunt for the wedding ring for the bereaved Howard family at the wreck site on Hwy. 25 was unsuccessful.  At some point, Mrs. Howard would like for club members to hunt the yard where Jordan Howard did yard work the day before the tragic accident.

Officer nominations were taken and voted on with no opposition.  Officers for 2016 are:
President - Kenny Bracket (since 2014)
Vice-president - Maggie Moffat (since about 2006)
Secretary - Vince DiCarlo (new)
Treasurer - Randy Reece ( since 2014)
Board Members - Robert Weaver (since about 2006), Haskell Staton (new)

The SCTAA met on September 28, 2015 with 31 in attendance.  The club has a total of 42 members so far this year.  We have 23 hunters signed up for the Fall Hunt at Lake Lure.

Robert Weaver presented the program titled “Encouragement” in Kenny’s absence.   One tip Robert and his son learned the hard way, was to always have a backup detector at a competition hunt.  Robert would also like input from members regarding planning and conducting another hunt in November or next spring.  He and son, Rodney, made an eBay purchase of a jar of old coins and will report back about what the jar contained.

Members were reminded that officer nominations will take place in October and voting will take place in November.

Upcoming:  Lake Lure Hunt October 24, 2015

August  treasury ended with a balance of $ 1,668.94.  We collected:  raffle  - $93; donation can -   $16;  2015 memberships $25; sale of decals - $0;  Fall Hunt at Lake Lure - $30; hunt fees paid in coins that I, erroneously, thought were to go into the hunt field - $30.  We paid out $0. August 2015

South Carolina Treasure and Artifact Association - August Minutes            August 26, 2015

The SCTAA met on August 24, 2015 with 26 in attendance.  The club has a total of 41 members so far this year; new/first-time members:  Glenn and Lolita Dudek and Robert Valenta.  So far, we have 20 hunters signed up for the Fall Hunt at Lake Lure.

The program was a sharing time.  Allen Sheriff brought his Civil War memorabilia, some he has found and some he purchased.  This led to a discussion about the dangers of old cannonballs that have fuses.  They can explode because moisture can cause the black powder to turn to gas.  Something like a shovel strike can produce a spark that results in an explosion.  Spartanburg’s Croft State Park is dangerous because it still contains live ammunition that was used for practice during World War I.

Upcoming:  Relic hunting at Cowpens National Battle Field for the Rangers - August 29 and 30

The SCTAA met on June 22, 2015 with 20 in attendance.  Carter Mahaffee re-joined the club for a total of 38 members so far this year.

The program was a discussion of Kenny’s travels to Arizona and Isle of Palms, SC.  Tombstone was impressive as an “authentic old west” town.  Kenny and wife, Chris, found old porcelain pieces in a pile of dirt there.  Near Phoenix, he found an arrowhead made of quartz.  Randy Reece shared some information about the Myrtle beach trip.  He is planning another trip at the end of summer.

We have some raffle tickets to sell for the FMDAC at the next meeting.  We also need to purchase prize coins for the remainder of the year (July through November).

May 2015

South Carolina Treasure and Artifact Association - May Minutes                May 26, 2015

The SCTAA met on May 18, 2015 with 28 in attendance including visitor, Robbie Robertson.   Steve Horkovy and Richard Revenson joined the club for a total of 37 members so far this year.

Bob Burns presented our program.  He is a retired Marine with 30 years of service in multiple locations including Okinawa.  He had an old model detector with which he found coins mostly.  He did find a ring at a home in Vienna, Austria that he was able to return to the family whose ancestor was buried with it.  He also found some WW II items.  Bob would like to get assistance from club members to learn the newer detectors and find sites to metal detect.

We have some raffle tickets to sell for the FMDAC at the next meeting.  We also need to purchase prize coins for the remainder of the year (July through November).

Upcoming:  Randy Reece’s Myrtle Beach trip - June 13-20 (come for all or part of week)

April treasury ended with a balance of $ 839.69.  We collected:  raffle  - $69; donation can -   $9;  2015 memberships - $50; sale of decals - $0;   Scavenger hunt - $0. The closing balance in the checking acct. is  $901.69.  We also keep $30 cash in small bills set aside to make change.
